Hidden Hand of God….

As believers we all have faced mountains or mole hills that seemed impossible to climb. Difficult relationships, destructive and sinful habits, stresses, sicknesses and other difficulties in life reinforces that we are human and we can not climb this mountain or a mole hill without the intervention of a loving heavenly Father who alone has the ability to help us. My desire and prayer as I am writing this is for my readers to feel the Hidden Hand of our loving Father in the midst of their problems.

If we study God’s Word we will observe that mountains very often symbolize not only problems but also the place where people encounter God’s enabling power and presence.  Few examples of mountain experiences in the Bible are: a) the angel of the Lord stopped Abraham from offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice at Mt.Moriah; Gen 22.  b) Moses and the Burning bush and Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai; Ex: 19. c) The Temple the center of Jewish worship was at Mt Zion and was referred to Israel’s God as God of the hills; 1 Kings 20:28. When Jesus Christ was in the earth mountain became a place of temptation where His humanity was tested; Matt 4:8. Mountain was also the place where His divinity was revealed; Matt 7:1-2. Indeed we are eagerly waiting as believers for ‘That Day’ when the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be raised for all the inhabitants of the earth to gather and see.

Let us explore together the Hidden Hand of God in the birth stories of number of people – Isaac, Samuel, John the Baptist, Moses and Jesus Christ. They all became a part of God’s plan to reclaim the lost world and had many mountain experiences in their lives. Who else but God alone could work in the heart of Pharaoh’s daughter to defy her father’s command and save the very child God would use to punish the Egyptian dynasty, break the power of Egypt, and free the Hebrew slaves? Think about the name Pharaoh’s daughter gave him; Moses in Hebrew ‘Moshe’, which means “draw or pull out.” The Hidden Hand of God was very much in that Egyptian History and God orchestrated the events and unknowingly Pharaoh’s daughter gave the name of his dynasty. Later God used the very Moses to draw out God’s people from Egyptian slavery and the Egyptian world view of pagan practices and idolatry which they had adopted.

Extrapolating it further, where did Moses get his compassion, the passion and the strength to withstand injustice? Sure enough he was trained by God more than what he learned in the Pharaoh’s court by many mountain experiences. One thing is for sure God knows what He was doing in the life of Moses for His great story from the very beginning when he was pulled out of the Nile by Pharaoh’s daughter. Isn’t that the truth in every believer’s life too?

Invariably when we say ‘mountains’ it is a location or a situational circumstance where our problems and God’s presence meet. In general we can say in all of our problems we see the presence of the hidden Hand of God and we begin to communicate with Him. The pivotal role played by Jachebed, Miriam, the mid-wives Shiprah and Puah, and Pharaoh’s daughter partnering with God as women in that culture is something to think about; Exodus 1-2.  Can we imagine the mountains they were facing? Whose Hidden Hand was behind the whole story?

Though we do not like these ‘mountains’ they are very beneficial for the spiritual growth of a believer in Christ because they serve as reminders of our inability and God’s enabling power. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us”; Eph 3:20. In the darkest moment of hurt and pain, He is there – weeping with us, hurting for us, strengthening us and encouraging us to climb ‘that mountain.’ The ‘width and height of our mountains’ may differ for each one of us, but the fact still remains the same. The Hidden Hand of God is there in all situations and circumstances in a believer’s life to equip us so that we will get closer with the Almighty, partnering with Him and venture together in rescuing the lost humanity.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth;”Psa: 121:1-2. King David the Psalmist teaches us to stay ourselves upon God, because He is Omni-potent, Omniscient, Omnipresent and He is all sufficient to over come any mountain in our lives.

Religion or the Gospel

At the very moment of that vain-glorious thought, a qualm came over me, a horrid nausea and the most dreadful shuddering….I looked down…..I was once more Edward Hyde”.1- Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
When circumstances go wrong, we are angry at God, since we believe, like Job’s friends that anyone who is good deserves a comfortable life.  When criticized, we are furious or devastated because we are self-righteous and the threats to that self-image must be destroyed at all costs. It may be our talents, moral records, personal discipline, social status, and so on and we should have them so they serve as our main hope, meaning, happiness, security, and significance, regardless of what we say our belief about God is!
Pharisaic religion not only destroys the soul but it has a tremendous effect socially. Very often they have a great sense of righteousness and despise and attack others who do not share with them their doctrinal beliefs and religious practices. Very often they come out as people building their self-worth based on moral and spiritual performance and it is a sort of a resume they would present it to God and the world. When Churches are filled with self-righteous, angry, insecure, exclusive, moralistic people the ‘Bride of Christ’ becomes very unattractive and ordinary people become very confused with the nature and idea of Christianity. For an unbeliever who is exploring from outside this is only another Religion.

If we move in that religious ‘Pharisaical mode’ we end up as anxious, insecure, irritable people much greater than experienced by an irreligious group because Pharisees know deep down inside they can not attain and live up to that standard. This in other words is a ‘Do it yourself Religion’ and they inwardly believe that they are accepted only when they obey. Their full motivation is based on fear and insecurity and is motivated to obey in order to get things from God and do not care whom they hurt in order to gratify themselves! An enormous capacity for egotism, self-absorption and great regard for self interests are hidden in the hearts of most which also leads to violence, crime, warfare and total disintegration of the society. “I knew myself, at the first breath of this new life, to be more wicked, tenfold more wicked, sold a slave to my original evil; and the thought in that moment, braced and delighted me like wine….[Edward Hyde’s] every act and thought centered on self.”2
The Gospel on the other hand contains the resources to build a unique identity in Christ alone. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”; Rom 3:23 (KJV).  The Gospel is that we are so flawed that Jesus died for my sins because I am so loved, valued and accepted. This will lead to deep humility and deep confidence and one can not feel superior to the other because Christ died for the whole world. Here the motivation is based on joy and one has a delight to obey God because want to resemble Christ.
When circumstances go wrong I understand that Jesus Christ took all my punishment and during the training process for eternity in this earth God will show His Fatherly love in my trials. When criticized, I cherish on what Christ has done on the Cross for me, and rest on His pain since He took all my shame. My identity is not built on my performance, but on Christ’s love for me on the finished work on the Cross. I am saved by sheer grace, so I can’t look down on those who believe or practice something different from me. It is only by grace that I am what I am. I have no inner need to win arguments. My identity and self-worth are centered on the one who died for his enemies, and makes it possible for some one to escape the spiral of bitterness, self-recrimination, and despair when something goes wrong.
So, there is a world of difference between the understanding that God accepts us because of     our efforts and the understanding that God accepts us ‘just as we are’ because of what Christ has done on the Cross for humanity. This will obviously result in two radically different motivations, two radically different spiritual identities, and two radically different kinds of lives. Most believers could oscillate between these two in varied wave lengths, but one has to come to the knowledge and understanding of this ‘unconditional grace of God’ which requires a complete change in our thought process. It is only grace that frees us from the ‘slavery of self’ which lurks in the midst of religion, morality and all good things. The message here is that we are not saved by our record, but by Christ’s record!

Whom am I living for?

Every one has to live for something or somebody desperately otherwise there is no meaning for life! That something or somebody invariably becomes the most important thing in our lives and we focus our attention and energy very much in attaining affirmation, security and significance from this. Knowingly or unknowingly this becomes the Lord of our lives and we begin to live for it!
As we explore this together we have to think for a minute the personal consequences of sin. In several ways sin has destroyed us personally and we try to find our self-worth in something or somebody apart from God. In our contemporary individualistic culture, we try to get our self-worth in our achievements, or social status, talents, or in our education or love relationships or in power and position. In a traditional Asian culture, very often self-worth is measured in terms of the identity that comes from fulfilling duties to families or giving service to societies. It is strange some times to think even that we love ourselves too much and we want affirmation and significance from something.
If anything threatens our identity we are anxious and paralyzed with fear and we go through tremendous pain within us without victory. Very often we crucify ourselves between the regrets of our past and the fear of the future and we begin to worship ourselves. We are very good at turning good things into ‘ultimate things’ and if our identity is not based on God, this can eventually turn into a deep form of addiction. In other words if we take our self-worth from achievements, family or work apart from God, they enslave us. The good things become the god-substitutes in our lives because our heart’s love become inordinate and we fall into patterns of life that are like ‘substance addiction’.  This situation can give rise to uncontrollable anguish if anything goes wrong in the above life pattern.
Let us look briefly what Apostle Paul is writing to the believers at Philippi when he was imprisoned at Rome. “Though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:  circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ  and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;  that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,  if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind”; Phil 3:4-16.
When one’s life is not centered on God, it is centered on self and this eventually will lead to emptiness and hurt however successful one may be. This in itself is sin and it has serious social consequences and also devastating effects on the world system. Dorothy Sayers an English writer saw many British intellectual elites in despair about the direction of human society at the wake of World War 11. In her book on ‘Creed or Chaos’ in 1947, she mentioned that their hopelessness was due to their loss of belief in the Christian Doctrine of “Original Sin” and humanity’s inherent pride and self-centeredness. Human society can become deeply fragmented when God the author of the Universe is substituted by ‘other gods’.
St. Augustine once said, if there is a God who created us then the deepest chambers of our souls cannot be filled by anything less than God. If Jesus Christ is God incarnate then by definition nothing can satisfy us like what He could do in our deepest parts of our souls. Then the author of glory becomes our significance, security and affirmation and He becomes that ‘Someone’ for whom we live for!
