Faithfulness

Faithfulness is a word which is not known to humanity any more. Betrayal by a friend who was trusted, by a spouse, by children, in working relationships, and more often even among Christian circles are becoming the normal way of life. Many people love to have dogs and when I asked them why, they would invariably give a common answer. They would say they are our best friend, and it is very faithful to us. People have been betrayed in life so much, even by their best friends, we have almost lost the word ‘faithfulness’ in human dictionary. If there is any term which catches the essence of man’s character at this time and era it is one word that is ‘faithlessness’. Would you join with me as we explore together the true meaning of faithfulness and why it is worth Biblically?

The dictionary then compares "faithful" with its synonyms:
Faithful implies steadfast adherence to a person or thing to which one is bound as by an oath or obligation; loyal implies undeviating allegiance to a person, cause, institution, etc. which one feels morally bound to support or defend;
Constant suggests freedom from fickleness in affections or loyalties; Staunch implies such a strong allegiance to one's principles or purposes as not to be turned aside by any cause; resolute stresses unwavering determination, often in adhering to one's personal ends or aims1.

Other synonyms include dedicated, steadfast, devoted, dependable, accurate, true, conscientious, dutiful, careful, scrupulous and thorough.
Faithless means "not keeping faith; dishonest; disloyal; unreliable; undependable; unbelieving." Its synonyms include doubting, treacherous and unscrupulous.
faithfulness noun loyalty, devotion, fidelity, constancy, dependability, trustworthiness, fealty, adherence She and her husband valued faithfulness as the cornerstone of their marriage.2

In the Greek of the New Testament: The word used for faithfulness in the New Testament is the noun pistis, which has both an active and a passive sense or use. First, in its active use, it often refers to “faith, belief, trust.” But in the passive sense, it means “faithfulness, reliability, fidelity.”3

Faithfulness in final analysis hinges very strongly upon what we value as important combined with commitment. It could be a friendship, employer, the spouse, family name, athletic team, or even a small thing. “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away”! 2 Tim 3:1-5. The above passage again talks about 19 characteristics with ‘lovers of themselves’ which again points to the character which is faithfulness.

Joseph was a character in the Bible whom God blessed for his faithfulness towards God in all circumstances. In his life he was rejected, kidnapped, enslaved, imprisoned, and he was in a life situation where his family thought genuinely he was dead and gone! Although his brothers were unfaithful to him, he graciously forgave them, and helped them during the time of great famine and shared his prosperity with them. When we read Book of Genesis chapter 45, we see that finally, Joseph revealed himself to his brothers and helped them in trouble.
How many of us would share our prosperity with our brothers who hurt us very badly?

Joseph promises to take care of his father and all the family during the years of famine and he was in a position to do so and he was the lord of Egypt. Pharaoh was also very respectful of Joseph, in gratitude because Joseph served for Pharaoh very faithfully all his life, and brought much good to Pharaoh. Like wise, Joseph was very respectful to his father and brethren and gave them all the provisions and blessed them.

We see the faithfulness of Joseph in God’s Word; Gen 47: 1-6. His faithfulness affected positively his entire family, his father and his brothers. Joseph was thrown in the pit by his brothers, eventually sold and ended up in prison. He would have wondered about his future many times when he was going through very rough life situations. Yet he had unwavering faith in God, and instead of despairing he loved God, obeyed Him and did what was right. God indeed honored him and blessed the work of his hands for his faithfulness and he became the lord of Egypt and in a position of power and authority to bless people around him because of his hard work and faithfulness. God blessed the work of his hands and he found favor in the sight of God and Pharaoh.

Joseph demonstrated how God forgives us and showers us with goodness even though we have sinned against Him. The same forgiveness and blessings will be ours if we ask for them. Here there is a comparison between Joseph and our Lord Jesus Christ. He was exalted above all powers and dominion and His will is that all that are His should be with Him one day, where He is; Jn 17: 17:24. Are we willing?

Science and Belief in God…

There is a world wide misconception that the more intelligent, rational, and scientific minded you are, the less one will be able to believe God. A study done in 1998 showed that only about 7% of the scientists in America believe in a personal relationship to a personal God! It is very common to believe there is a war going on between Science and Religion. Media reports and the wide spread publicity of battles between secular and religious people over the teachings of evolution in schools, stem-cell research, in vitro fertilization, and teachings of many other areas of medicine and science give credibility to the claims of Dawkins, Harris, and others in that field. There is a common world wide assumption that one can be either scientific and rational or religious. Does one have to choose between thinking scientifically and belief in God?

“My scientific training makes it difficult if not impossible to accept the teachings of Christianity,” said Thomas a young Asian medical resident. “As a believer in evolution, I can’t accept that Bible’s prescientific accounts of the origin of life.”1

“And the Bible is filled with accounts of miracles,” added Michelle, a med student. “They simply could not have happened.”2

Starting from the miracle of incarnation, birth of Jesus Christ, and the bodily resurrection of Christ the New Testament is filled with accounts of miracles Jesus did during his earthly ministry. The scientific mistrust of God’s Word began with the Enlightenment thinking that miracles can not be reconciled to modern thinking, and to the rationalistic thinking pattern of the world. In other words the world input in the process of thinking pattern of a modern man is a huge stumbling block to believe what is written in the Bible.

I have started my career as a young Assistant Professor in Chemistry and this gave me good foundation of Science and to know the necessary details to stand for God’s Word when evolutionists debate with Christianity. One of the reasons that many would not be able to agree with Dawkins is that we are willing to concede that science may not be able to account for everything about human existence to every thinker’s satisfaction. Evolutionary science assumes that complex life-forms eventually evolved from less complex forms through the process of natural selection. This is in direct contradiction to the Genesis account of creation in the Bible. Many atheists are beginning to believe that Dawkins is wrong that science can not explain everything, and why scientific thought can be compatible with religious belief. In recent years majority of the scientists consider themselves deeply or moderately religious, and the numbers in this trend are on the increase. This is confirming that there is no necessary disjunction between science and deep faith.

“I believe science as we know it is a product of the Christian worldview. It was only in the Christian world that science developed and I believe could have developed. For example, in the Buddhist or Hindu worldview this physical realm is more or less regarded as an illusion and not representing ultimate reality. Of course, Christians don't regard this world as eternal, but nevertheless it's real. Science has flowed from a Christian understanding of reality, a Christian understanding of God, and a Christian understanding of the natural world. In general I believe that science is legitimate, that it does reveal the glory of God that it does confirm what the Scriptures say is valid and true”. Dr.Baumgardner.3

What is the purpose of Biblical miracle? They lead us not only simply to cognitive belief, but to worship God, and to realize that the Creator God is an awesome God, who formed us in our mother’s womb and knitted us. “For You formed my inward parts, You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works; and that my soul knows very well.” Ps: 139:13-14. We may justly be astonished at these living temples, the composition of every part, and the harmony of it all together. Psalm 139, talks about God’s perfect knowledge of man; and King David lays down this doctrine of address to God, acknowledging it to Him and giving Him the glory.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Kepler was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer. He did early work on light, and established the laws of planetary motion about the sun. He also came close to reaching the Newtonian concept of universal gravity - well before Newton was born! His introduction of the idea of force in astronomy changed it radically in a modern direction. Kepler was an extremely sincere and pious Lutheran, whose works on astronomy contain writings about how space and the heavenly bodies represent the Trinity. Kepler suffered no persecution for his open avowal of the sun-centered system, and, indeed, was allowed as a Protestant to stay in Catholic Graz as a Professor (1595-1600) when other Protestants had been expelled! 4

Jesus in His earthly ministry used miraculous power to heal the sick, feed the poor, raised the dead, the lame walked, and many received eye sight. The modern world and the modern man think of miracles as the suspension of the natural order; whereas Jesus meant them to be the restoration of the natural order. When God originally created the world there was no disease, hunger, or death and that is before the Fall in Genesis 3. Jesus Christ came to restore what was lost, and His miracles are a challenge to many minds, but a great promise to many hearts, and the hope of what we want to have in the future.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Einstein is probably the best known and most highly revered scientist of the twentieth century, and is associated with major revolutions in our thinking about time, gravity, and the conversion of matter to energy (E=mc2). Although never coming to belief in a personal God, he recognized the impossibility of a non-created universe. The Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: "Firmly denying atheism, Einstein expressed a belief in "Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the harmony of what exists." This actually motivated his interest in science, as he once remarked to a young physicist: "I want to know how God created this world, I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts, the rest are details." Einstein's famous epithet on the "uncertainty principle" was "God does not play dice" - and to him this was a real statement about a God in whom he believed. A famous saying of his was "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."5

Summarizing it in a nut-shell, Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Omnipotent God of the Bible is the Creator of all things. If we are in a battle in our minds between choosing Science and Christian faith, we have to read clearly what is said in God’s Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it;” John 1:1-5. Science and research in all areas are always in the process of discovering ‘something new’ which was already there!

The Real Rescue Mission….

The ‘Rescue Mission’ for the whole humanity will not be understood unless we try to understand the sufferings of God. The Gospel of John introduces us to this mysterious concept of God as Tri-personal, and that is Trinity. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” John 1:1-5.

The Son of God was not a created being, but the Creator and has lived throughout all eternity, “in the bosom of the Father” 1 Jn 1:18; and this shows the relationship Jesus Christ enjoyed with God the Father, a relationship of absolute intimacy and perfect love. In order to complete the great ‘Rescue Mission’ at the end of His life on this planet earth He was cut off from God the Father. This could result in great suffering of inner agony because this is the relationship Jesus Christ desperately wanted with His Father!

If a friend or a mild acquaintance turns against us, criticizes, condemns and says things like they do not want to see us again, it is painful. If a spouse does this, or if a parent would do this to their son or daughter it is psychologically damaging and it is very painful. Can we for a minute imagine the pain and sufferings of Christ when His beloved Father abandoned Christ in order to fulfill this ‘Rescue Mission’ for humanity? This pain was the result of loosing the infinite love of His Father He had from eternity, and these sufferings would have been eternally unbearable, even though it was temporary. The intensity of His pain can be understood a little bit when Jesus cried on the Cross, His cry of dereliction, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me”? This is a very deep relational statement and this cry has a ruthless authenticity and it is very hard for any one of us to fully comprehend. Jesus Christ did not die renouncing God, who is His Father, neither did He surrender his Faith in God, but expressed His anguished prayer in the form of a cry of affirmation of separation from His Father in the moment of His total abandonment from His Father.

On the Cross Jesus Christ experienced the worst suffering physical, emotional, mental and Spiritual; suffering of rejection, abandonment and intense pain which is overwhelming for us to understand it perfectly. He knows what is despair, rejection, loneliness, poverty, bereavement, betrayal, torture, beatings, and imprisonment and total abandonment. He suffered in love for the humanity, and He alone can identify with the humanity who were abandoned and forsaken. God indeed took our misery and suffering so seriously that He was willing to take it on Himself.

“Christ, the god-man suffers too, with patience. Evil and death can no longer be entirely imputed to him since he suffers and dies. The night on Golgotha is so important in the history of man only because, in its shadows, the divinity ostensibly abandoned its traditional privilege, and lived through to the end, despair included, the agony of death. Thus is explained the “Lama sabachthani” and the frightful doubt of Christ in agony” – Albert Camus

The Rescue Mission is done and now we have the hope that our suffering is not at all in vain. “They say of some temporal suffering, “ No future bliss can make up for it,” not knowing that Heaven, once attained, will work backwards and turn even that agony into a glory.”- C.S Lewis. Is there an end for suffering? The answer to that is yes, because Jesus Christ has conquered death and suffering and every one who mourns will be joyful because of the hope we have in Jesus Christ. The doctrine of resurrection can instill within a believer a powerful hope, which promises a life which we most longed for.

There is ultimate end to evil and suffering and it will be so vanquished and all that has happened will serve to make our future life, peaceful, joyful, eternal and more glorious. What a great ‘Rescue Mission’ accomplished in Christ Jesus because of God’s great love for the lost humanity by the wonder working power of His Spirit?

If we try to understand the sufferings of Christ for the redemption of the human kind, then we can have deeper consolation, confidence and security in Christ to face the brutal realities of this earth. We begin to understand slowly that God is indeed Emmanuel that is God is with us and at all times in the worst of sufferings. Then we can understand better what Romans 8: 31-39 is talking about; God’s everlasting love for mankind!

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is who condemns? It is Christ, who died, and further more is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written “For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord;” Rom:8:31-39.

O Lord, my God I am so humbled by Your ‘Rescue Mission’ for humanity; the more I try to comprehend the more I need Your abundant grace to comprehend. Thank You for Your salvation plan for mankind and for me. Thank you for accepting me as your heir and beloved child. Thank You again for Jesus Christ and for Your Spirit which brings me to that conviction and realization. You are a wonderful Father and Your love is so amazing, and please help me to love You more; Amen.

Heart & Mind Connection…

The words heart and mind were used often in God’s Word, and very often interchangeably. We often refer our mind to cognitive thinking and our heart to emotional thinking. Let us see what God’s Word relates regarding this. “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people;” Heb 8:10. We see that the heart seem to perform as the mind regularly through out the Scriptures.

The mind battles one endures in this world need not have to be written off as ‘it is just the way’; nor one have to fight them alone. We have to understand that we have a common enemy who wants to undermine what God desires to do in our lives. If we are not careful we are vulnerable, exhausted, overwhelmed, burdened, and desperate and eventually will be caught up in things that keep us away from the presence of God. Our mind can be filled with words like hopeless, no good, failure, impossible, it is over, why try and so on with all negative discouraging words. We need not have to stand and watch deadly games played in our mind and lives without defending them. Bible gives us the necessary weapons, and teaches us to stand against the wiles of the devil in Ephesians 6:11. Bible talks about praying with all kinds of prayer, supplications in the Spirit, being watchful to the end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints; Eph 6:18. When we do this faithfully we will be able to realize where the lies are coming from, and we will be less willing to believe them.

[There are at least forty thousand neurons in the heart (nerve cells). That is as many as you find in the various subcortical centers of the brain. These can be likened to a very sophisticated checking machine, which checks for "congruence for interaction" and is actually a still, small voice that goes up and helps with your decision making. As that information arrives, you make a decision of your will; is this good for me or is this bad for me? Am I going to accept or reject this? And you rely on the heart to guide that decision. This cognitive ability of the heart is due to a chemical called ANF which actually controls the thinking process to help you make a good decision! But get this…

If your mind is chaotic, it completely wipes out that message (the secreted chemicals) from the heart, and your body goes into a state of dis-ease or lack of peace, and you feel it physically. WOW. Isn't that what the Bible has said all along? I refer to Philipians 4:6-8 and Ephesians 4:17-32.

It's what we think on and allow ourselves to believe that makes or breaks us. When we listen to and follow our heart intelligence, we become more educated, balanced and understanding. It follows that the more balanced and coherent our emotions become, the less likely we will be to experience sickness and disease. Rather than write any more, I'm going to give you some references you can check out if you're interested:

Ardell. Proverbs 23:7 NKJV "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he...."]1

[Conscious, authentic living means creating harmony. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get wrapped up in "mind-stuff." The brain is a wonderful thing, I wouldn't want to be without one. However, the brain alone does not hold the keys to happiness. Happiness requires a harmonious communication between the mind and heart. And, wouldn't you know, there is a science to it.]2

The two most powerful weapons against the lies of the enemy are God’s Word, and Prayer and Praise. “For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”; Heb 4:12. It is also such a great assurance to know when God is on our side, who can be against us and He has not given us a spirit of fear, but He has given us a Spirit of power, love and of sound mind.

Prayer and Praise are powerful tools because God’s presence comes to dwell in our midst when we worship Him. In His presence there is fullness of joy and we find healing and transformation for our lives. The Word of God says, a merry heart doeth good like a medicine, and we do not want futile thoughts to darken our hearts and mind! “Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were they thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened’; Rom 1:21. Depression, bitterness, anger, fear, rejection, hopelessness, loneliness, rebellion, evil, and many illnesses all begin in the mind and these take control of one’s life unless we take control of the mind with God’s word. The heart tend to believe what the mind says “As the man thinketh in his heart so is he” Prov 23:7. Let us mature in Christ and be renewed in our minds to have the mind of Christ; 1 Cori 2:16.

Scriptures to support:
“But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members;” Rom 7:23.
“So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law
of sin;” Rom 7: 25b.
“And you shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with
all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment;” Mk:12:30.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the
weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down
strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself
against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the
obedience of Christ;”2 Cori 10: 3-5.
“For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace;” Rom 8:6.

Prayer:
Lord, we pray for Your protection on our mind to shield us from the lies of the enemy. Help us to clearly discern between Your voice and the other voices, and show us how to take every thought captive in obedience to Your Word. May we continuously thirst for Your Word and hunger for Your truth so that we can recognize wrong thinking and align our thinking pattern based on Your truth.

Give us the strength to resist lying thoughts and remind us that we should work towards becoming the mind of Christ. In areas where the enemy has strong foot holds in our minds, we humbly ask in Jesus Christ’s Name to cleanse our minds by the wonder working power of Your Holy Spirit. We stand on Your promises and thank You for Your Word that You have given us authority over all the power of the enemy. Thank You for Your love for us which is demonstrated on the Cross by Jesus Christ, and doing it all for us to overcome our common enemy.

We do not want to entertain confusion, but want to live in clarity. We do not want to be tormented by impure, evil, negative and sinful thoughts but be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and accept what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Enable us to be strong in the power of Your might. Help us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our request be known to You. May You give us grace so that we may think whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, having virtue, or anything praise worthy. May Your peace which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and mind in Christ Jesus; Amen.

Understanding Depression Biblically

Depression is described as a lowered frequency of adjustive responses to daily life. Compared to a normal person’s responses to life, the depressed person’s responses are fewer and slower. The depressed person’s repertoire is also a passive one and it is marked by the effort to avoid or escape any uncomfortable or aversive social consequences.

Concealing sin often leads to depression. If you confess your sins and turn from them you will find mercy; Pro: 28:13. Biblical Example: Cain’s depression was due to guilt: Gen: 4:6-7. Cain began badly by presenting a sinful offering before God. When God rejected the offering, Cain complicated the problem by responding wrongly to the rejection. He became angry and depressed and his face fell. The anger and depression were addressed by God, who warned against the consequences of this wrong response. God graciously explained: “If you do right, you feel right.” Vs: 6-7. God also warned Cain that the failure to repent and offer the right kind of sacrifice would continue to complicate the problem and would cause him to fall into deeper sin. Clutches of sin is like a wild animal crouching at the door anxiously waiting to devour him that is destroy him.

God offered hope to Cain by saying that he could reverse the spiral and rule over sin by breaking out of the sinful pattern through repentance and subsequent change of behaviour. Sin leads to guilt and depression, sinful handling of sin further complicates the matter leading to greater guilt and deeper depression, ad infinitum. Cain’s anger turns into hate and murder; Gen: 4:3-8; 4:4; 8. His sinful behaviour leads to sinful responses further and he did not repent at all.

Fear leads to depression. God dealt with Elijah in 1 King 19:1-10; “A still small voice”: Elijah escapes from Jezebel, and he was tired and weary; God gave him sleep, fed him and strengthened him and ministered unto him for Elijah’s next mission. Lack of nutrition can also be an overlooked cause of depressive symptoms, and laboratory tests can identify any vitamin deficiencies. Emotional distress interferes with the proper absorption of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which in turn can alter the availability of neurotransmitters. Brandt (1988, p.247-266) offers a guide to vitamins and food supplements that may assist one in over coming depression.1 Proper nutrition provides the natural manufacturing of essential neurotransmitters. The way out of depression caused by guilt is confession and seeking God’s forgiveness. Ps: 32:5; Ps: 32:1-2, 11.

Observe Cain’s language here at Gen 4: 1-15; (Cain murders Abel) there were additional sinful responses. Cain pleaded not guilty and adds rebellion to his sin. He endeavours to cover a deliberate murder with a deliberate lie; and the devil was working as a murderer and liar in Cain from the beginning. It is shocking for me to even think, Cain even thought for a minute he could conceal his sins from a Holy God, who sees all things. Gen 4:11-15, describes Cain’s dialogue with God and because of his sinful response and guilt, Cain sees the whole creation armed against him.

It is important to check our life patterns and issues of our heart on regular basis. For example:
1. Check the complicating problems (letting down on chores: ironing, house keeping, tasks at one’s business, etc.). One should tackle this God’s way.
2. Check all factors (incidents etc...) which would have led to the sinful behaviour initially and take Biblical action by the power of the Holy Spirit to replace patterns. (Put off/ put on)
After explaining dynamics of depression, set out to attack the sinful tendencies of the human heart that would surrender to feelings rather than follow the path of Christian responsibility. The Biblical counsellor or a Pastor who is matured in Christ is in a unique position to assist depressed persons in the congregation in fighting off the debilitating guilt that often accompanies depression.

Scriptures for help: David was very depressed until he confessed his sin adultery; Ps: 32:3-4. Put your hope in God when you are downcast; Ps: 42. Words of comfort were given to faithful Israel as they became depressed while in Babylon. They were called to put their faith into action in their dark hour; Is: 40. We may experience some tough situations, but we can avoid deep depression by focusing on God and His Word; 2 Cori: 4:8-9; 16-.18. Think of Paul what he went through, without getting depressed, sustained by God’s grace; 2 Cor: 11:23-28. The Word of God must be carefully selected, accurately interpreted, rigorously applied, and effectively implemented to a counselee’s situation with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Depression and mood disorders can be divided into: major depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymic disorder, and also cyclothymic disorder as the primary disorders of mood. Major depression, also called unipolar depression, is identified by sad, empty, or hopeless feelings; slowed physical and cognitive behaviour, including cognitive disorientation; change in weight, appetite and sleeping patterns; diminished interest or pleasure in activities and time spend with friends; and occasional to frequent thoughts of death and suicide. The presence of several of these symptoms for a period of exceeding two or more weeks is a symptom and sufficient criteria for a major depressive episode. Referrals for Medical professional help can be very helpful in such cases.

In this article the focus is on 'non-organic illnesses' which needs to be addressed in an early stage and it is much easier to ignore these issues. Prolonged guilt, fear, anxiety, bitterness, hatred and resentment can take anyone in a deep down ward spiral which can lead to depression and hopelessness and despair. If the depression has its roots in helplessness and hopelessness, the Biblical counseling surely is a messenger of hope.
