Neuroscience behind Honesty....

The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them; Prov. 11: 3. 

          Naturally humans have a tendency to trust another person and we our proclivity to be honest seem to be the fundamental human nature. Unless we meet big liars as part of our life, generally we tend to trust the word of a coworker, sibling, lover, or neighbor. Most people wanted to be honest in their wordings and we expect others to do the same.

         Machiavellian approaches like manipulation, exploitation, and deception generally tend to become personally more profitable temporarily. We selectively choose to cooperate only with people who are good, reliable, and trustworthy partners. When we are honest and trustworthy, the word gets around; and when people are cheats and liars, the news travel even faster. 

 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight; Prov. 12: 22.

The God of truth loves the truth and regards the lips that spread lies as offensive, an abomination and abhorrent. When we deal truthfully we are creatures of His delight. The same God who regards lies as an abomination takes delight in those who value and speak the truth. Wisdom literature the Book of Proverbs, points to us plainly, stop lying and start telling the truth.

 

We speak of honesty as a virtue—something moral, upright, or ethical. But what if it’s more than that? What if telling the truth is biological restoration? Not just noble… but necessary? Because just as lies fracture the psyche, truth fuses it back together. The Body is Wired for Truth. Neuroscience reveals that congruence—alignment between our inner experience and outer expression—regulates the nervous system. When we speak truthfully: The prefrontal cortex relaxes; there is no need to inhibit or rehearse. The amygdala calms; there is no threat in coherence. The vagus nerve activates; signaling safety, not survival. The heart rate stabilizes, and the breath deepens. This is not just mental peace, but a physiological alignment.[iii]

Neuroscience studies have shown repeatedly, when we focus on good, our brains literally rewires itself  to look for more good. This is called neuroplasticity, and this is not only motivation but indeed science connected about our nervous system.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of honesty as the fundamental virtue, highlighting God values  truthfulness and integrity in all of our actions and words. 

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body; Ephes. 4:25. 

A lying tongue clearly stands out as a serious offense against divine principles. By following honesty as virtue, we strengthen the community, recognizing we are all connected as one body in Christ. The new man tells the truth. The motive for doing this is because we are members of one another, therefore there is no place for lying. 

“The way we live ought to manifest the truth of what we believe. A messy life speaks of a messy and incoherent faith.” Elisabeth Elliot. 

Imagine this example: When we accidently touch something very hot burning our hand, and telling our brain that is cool!? Does this make sense? Is it the truth we are telling our brain? Does not telling the truth very important? Do we not know that the members of our body are mysteriously wired and we are members of each other?  

         Neuroscience is pointing and relating to, For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he, Proverbs 23:7a; with biological information. Our thoughts are generating chemicals in our brain.

          In our body is the brain and it has the size of 2 fists. Brain is the biggest chemical factory, and it creates chemicals, releasing every day when we think! From the time we are created fearfully and wonderfully in our mother’s womb, and the reins are being formed, it is capturing chemicals. Every thought becomes a memory! 

As new creations through Christ, we are called to live lives characterized by truth. Speaking the truth reflects our understanding of God’s grace in our lives. Living truthfully brings peace and safety as we trust in the Lord’s protection. Avoiding lies allows us to experience a fulfilling life filled with goodness. When we speak truth from our heart, we exemplify God’s character.
