With the voice of Singing-Part 1

With the voice of Singing-Part 1

In this section I am making a connection between prayer and songs. Prayers are heart felt expression of our desires to God, and it is so with songs, and the only addition would be the music.

When we carefully analyze the Church History, we come to the conclusion that Music played a major role in the worship services and it is a form of Prayer. After the Great Schism, music in Western Christianity took new beginnings and it was the beginning of the Polyphonic music around 11th century. During the Renaissance period music changed dramatically and the major and the minor modes in music were implied by the use of triad. History also reveals that the problems the Church faced then were the problems we face and experience today. There were continuous conflict between the Christian and pagan cultures then  as we experience today and in spite of these conflicts, the Church music with the rich culture and heritage of ‘Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs’ of Jewish tradition continued to develop. We have to come to the conclusion that the Sovereign God of the Universe was orchestrating the events around and the rich culture of Prayer and Songs came into in spite of opposition.

We can easily come to this conclusion that the early churches were a singing church and their prayers were in the form of a chant. In other words that Songs were not an accompaniment to worship, instead singing is worship itself, and they were singing a form of prayer to the God who dwells in the praises of mankind. We may not be able to find the early manuscripts but logically we can construct music, something very similar by learning the principles of Psalmody and by borrowing from the oral tradition we can create our own hymns, prayers, spiritual songs to enable our worship services. This may very well be used for congregational music.

Having lived in different countries around the Globe like Singapore, Malaysia, India, United Kingdom, United States and Canada I come to the conclusion Music varies, but one common music in worship services were the Hymns. Christian music whether East or West has been handed down through centuries in spite of their cultural and different styles. In other words Christians around the Globe whether they are from the East or the West had been using Songs, a form of prayer in their worship services, and it is a form of expressing the heart’s desire of mankind to the Living God who dwells in the unapproachable light. Whether it is Psaltery, hymnody, liturgy, chorale, oratorio, cantata, or sacred anthems, they reveal the inner man, the heart of man to the Living God and this is a form of Prayer and it is a form of building relationship to the Living God.

We get Scriptural ideals and precedents when we look at the music of Hebrews and also Indians. India is a Hindu Nation, and early morning they chant their Hindu Scriptures, in the form of music and that is their prayer. If you happen to be in one of the primary classes in India, memorizing poetry is taught in the form of music and this is one way where students retained in their memory quickly. Here I am comparing a Christian culture with a pagan tradition, where they both enjoy music and singing is a form of prayer and worship. For Hebrews, music is primarily vocal and that is servant of the Word and it is very ideal to say expressing from their heart. For example certain portions of their Scriptures like Magnificat, Lord’s Prayer, Phil 2:5-11, are sung from very early times and it still exists. In those days, as in the Old Testament days, Temple instruments were talked about and much less about tunes, and after the destruction of the Temple Music was subdued.

In the early days usually voices did not accompany instruments; and very often trumpets, and shofars are used to bring order in a public place and also to lead a procession. Very often harps are used to enhance worship along with some other sweet stringed instruments both for Hebrew music and also for pagan music. Very often they sang Scriptures, worship songs and hours of prayer were observed, even singing at the Lord’s Table seemed to be the norm. Churches and synagogues shunned the pagan, sensual music, and singing with one voice the Scriptures; and choirs became part of the worship later.
[Three categories of sacred song were mentioned: “Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs”

a.         Psalms: Their music based on simple melodic patterns called tetrachords.
1.  Sung antiphonally.
2.  Sung in unison.
3.  “Lined”.
4.  Used responsively.
5.      Used for personal devotion; even young Christians were expected to
       know them by head.
6.   Used extensively within the services.]1

There are fourteen psalms that were written by David to commemorate some event in his life. And I want to mention about Psalm 51; which is probably one of the best known of David’s songs and there is little difficulty in placing it within the context of his life. When we read 2 Samuel 12, it talks about David’s adultery with Bathsheba, who is the wife of his beloved servant Uriah, the Hittite. David thought no one knows about the sin he has committed with Bathsheba, until Prophet Nathan when he came and confronted him. The beautiful part of the story is when David repented of his sin and wickedness he has committed which is not only adultery but also murder of his beloved servant Uriah. This psalm not only expresses his deep sorrow over his sin but his repentance and his lament over his sin. This story itself is a prayer unto God, and also his repentance is a beautiful format of prayer. When music is introduced into these words, it can be sung and it is still a beautiful prayer.

Psalm 131; is the song of the Humble; and is below and it is a prayer.
1Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and forever.
There are seventy-three other Psalm written by David which are indeed prayer from his heart and they are below:

3 Confidence facing the enemy; 4 Thoughts in the night; 5 A morning prayer; 6 Prayer for mercy during trouble; 7 The prayer of a wronged man; 8 God’s glory and man’s honour; 9 Praise for deliverance; 11 God our refuge; 12 Good thoughts for bad times; 13 The deserted soul; 14 The future of the fool; 15 The happiness of the holy; 16 Joy in God’s presence; 17 Deliverance from the wicked; 18 Calling upon God in distress; 19 The works and word of God; 20 A prayer for the king

41 Psalm of the compassionate; 51 The Penitent’s Psalm; 52 The fate of the wicked; 53 The fate of the fool; 54 A prayer for deliverance; 55 The Lord will sustain; 56 A song for the distressed; 57 The mercy and truth of God; 58 The punishment of the wicked; 59 Triumph over enemies; 60 Prayer for national deliverance; 61 The prayer of a troubled heart; 62 Confidence in God; 63 The thirsty soul; 64 Appeal for help against enemies; 65 God’s provisions for the earth; 66 God’s power and works; 68 The God of Israel; 69 The prayer for deliverance; 70 Deliverance from persecutors; 86 Prayer for deliverance; 101 A perfect heart; 103 The benefits of the Lord; 108 A song of confidence in God; 109 A cry to God for help; 110 The king as priest and victor; 122 The peace of Jerusalem; 124 God’s deliverance; 131 A song of the humble; 138 The Lord is Faithful; 139 The prayer of a believing heart; 140 For protection against enemies; 141 Conduct amidst trials; 142 The Prisoner’s prayer; 143 The prayer of the soul in distress; 144 The warrior’s psalm; 145 The goodness of the Lord.

Bringing in Thy Kingdom

In the synoptic Gospels ‘the Kingdom of God’ was mentioned many times and if we study carefully we find the teachings of Jesus were centred on the Kingdom of God. Many discussions were centred on the Kingdom of God, and Kingdom of heaven, and it has become increasingly clear that they are synonyms.
When the Bible talks about the Davidic –like kingdom, in Jerusalem it was a political kingdom, which was very political in nature and we see Israel wanted freedom from the Romans. When we talk about Spiritual kingdom of God, which was well understood as God’s rule in human hearts; “the kingdom of God is within you." Luk: 17:20-21.
Jesus in his earthly ministry was pointing to the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises, and affirmed the coming of the reign of God. When Jesus came, when the Word became flesh and dwelt among men the following things happened:
Satan has been defeated; Luk: 10:18; 11:20-22.
The scattered Israel has been gathered as predicted before; Mk: 2:15-16; Lk: 14:15-24.
All the Old Testament promises are fulfilled; Lk: 10:23-24.
The resurrection of the dead has begun, because Jesus was resurrected; 1 Cori: 15:20.
The New Covenant has been initiated; 1 Cori: 11:25.
The Holy Spirit the Comforter has been given on the day of Pentecost as foretold by the prophets; Mk: 1:8.
The above verses totally affirm the coming of the Kingdom of God, and it is here and it’s realized in history. The story of Jesus has marked the history and the coming of God’s Kingdom. When we talk about the Kingdom of God, we have to be careful, because it has already come when Jesus came, and also it is not yet too, because we are waiting for the second coming of Jesus Christ, to establish everything, and bring it to completion. Since the Kingdom has come through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, believers while on this earth can be transformed into His likeness with ever increasing glory; But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord”; 2 Cori: 3:18.
What does it mean when Jesus said the Kingdom of God is within you?
When the Pharisees questioned Jesus, “When the Kingdom of God would come”? Jesus responded, “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:  Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.; Lk:17:20-21. Pharisees probably could not understand the answer from Jesus, when He said, the Kingdom of God, is within you, because it is very incomplete and also they did not understand the things of God.
Jewish nation could not reconcile the fact that Jesus was the Messiah, because they had the preconceived idea that the Messiah would come and elevate the Jewish nation to a prominence. They wanted a deliverer and a liberated nation, but does not want to hear the message of repentance and entering the Kingdom of God through a narrow gate. The religious leaders of that day thought that if Jesus, the Messiah would come, they would be the first ones’ to discover the promised Savior’s coming, and not the despised shepherds!
Jesus confronted the thinking for the Pharisees and told them they were totally mistaken. Jesus in his earthly ministry preached about the Kingdom of God, and His coming was to pay for the penalty of sins; Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel”; Mk: 1:14-15. This was the first coming as a baby in the manger, the mystery and plan of God for His one and only Son. In the second coming He will come as a King and Judge to rule the nations and to establish the Kingdom of God on this earth; “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation”; Heb 9:28.
Jesus also said that the Kingdom of God would come and the laws of the Kingdom of God should be understood and written in our hearts. We are called to pray for the Kingdom to come, and Jesus asked us to seek the things concerning His Kingdom first. “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”; Matt: 6:10. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”; Matt 6:33.
When we truly repent of our sins, and we are led of God’s Spirit in truth and righteousness, we immediately, voluntarily come under the authority and of the coming of the Kingdom of God. It is written that we are symbolically transferred into the Kingdom when we commit our lives to God, and begin to live a life as the Lord leads and guides us; “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son”:Col:1:13.
What does this mean? This means our primary allegiance is transferred from all the other kingdoms of this world to God’s Kingdom, and we are totally subject to God’s laws, and we genuinely belong to a different community and that is the church of God. As we are totally depraved, mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally and also in our understanding ever since the Fall, we can ask the question, how can we belong to the Kingdom of God, while living in this world and in the kingdoms of this world. God has never left us as orphans, and He has given the Holy Spirit, the Parakletos, the perfect Counselor to lead us and guide us in the path of truth and righteousness and will give us power, love and sound mind; “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”; 2 Tim 1:7. Parakletos is the Greek word for Holy Spirit, and He will give us the ability to live by God’s laws in spite of our human weaknesses, and those who are led by God are called the sons of God; “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God”; Rom 8:14.
The Church, the body of regenerate believers will have the opportunity to taste and experience the powers of age to come as according to what is written; “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come”; Heb: 6:4-5.
Can we all enter into God’s Kingdom? Yes, indeed the invitation is for all, but only who can pass through the right door and that door is Jesus, God’s only Son. Bible does speaks about our citizenship in heaven; “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ”: Phil 3:20. For it is written that flesh and blood will not inherit heaven, and it is important that humans must be changed from flesh and blood into spirit, and that means from mortal to immortal, at the long waited second coming of Jesus Christ; “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality; 1 Cori: 15:50-53.

“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation”; Heb: 9: 28.  “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever”; Rev: 11:15. The above verses affirms that ‘Kingdom of God, is not a philosophical perspective, or a perception of people and we cannot limit that to ‘kingdom within us as believers’.  Kingdom of God, is far more than, what believers think as God within our hearts and minds as followers of Jesus Christ. It is the Kingdom that God’s faithful elect will enter when Christ return, and what He is going to establish here on this earth. So we pray in one accord for God’s Kingdom to come; “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”; Matt: 6:9-10.

Can heavens declare God’s glory?

True understanding of the Science behind a phenomenon adds to its beauty and also points to a higher intelligence which as humans it is harder to fathom. This becomes extremely fascinating and a lovely object of contemplation and points us to the intelligence behind the Creation and God the Creator.

Above our house, August 23rd 2015 just after mid night between 3.00-4.00 a.m

I wanted to see Northern lights at least for the last five years and drove to many places in vain. The colours in the aurora seem to be a mystery to an ordinary man, but still people travel thousands of miles to see the brilliant natural light which comes in the Earth’s atmosphere. Finally in August this year God gave me this blessed opportunity to see that at least five times from my own house through the glass window. When I saw the above in front of my eyes above my house, this August, and the vastness of the Universe, I asked a question to myself, where do I fit in? Words of Psalmist proclaim that, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him”? Psa: 8:3-4.

Science behind Aurora Borealis or Northern lights.
Our sun is 93 million miles away. But its effects extend far beyond its visible surface. Great storms on the sun send gusts of charged solar particles hurtling across space. If Earth is in the path of the particle stream, our planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere react.
When the charged particles from the sun strike atoms and molecules in Earth’s atmosphere, theyexcite those atoms, causing them to light up.
What does it mean for an atom to be excited? Atoms consist of a central nucleus and a surrounding cloud of electrons encircling the nucleus in an orbit. When charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth’s atmosphere, electrons move to higher-energy orbits, further away from the nucleus. Then when an electron moves back to a lower-energy orbit, it releases a particle of light or photon.
What happens in an aurora is similar to what happens in the neon lights we see on many business signs. Electricity is used to excite the atoms in the neon gas within the glass tubes of a neon sign. That’s why these signs give off their brilliant colors. The aurora works on the same principle – but at a far more vast scale.

The two rays exiting at the lowest point in the drop — the topmost two rays entering the drop — are nearly parallel to each other, whereas all the other rays have significantly different directions.  By a curious quirk of geometry and optics, we have an entire group of rays (clustered around roughly 42.5°) that are all going in the same direction.  More rays equals more light intensity, and we therefore have an unusually bright “beam” of light leaving the droplet at those special angles.  These collection of parallel rays form the rainbow that we see.

Psalm 19 declares: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.  The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.  Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

We can continue pondering with the question in our hearts more than once, “why the Universe does has to be so enormous, beyond our comprehension”. Scientists can continue to discern how God did it, many can revel in the beauty of the incomprehensible creation, and come to the conclusion that there should be a Master designer, with unfathomable wisdom, knowledge and intelligence. Time and again we can come to the conclusion that as intelligent species of all the other species created, we are uniquely created because we ask this question and sometimes ponder in our hearts. “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained”; Psa: 8:3, we come to the humble adoration that Thou art an awesome God.

The fact we ask this question often gives us hints and points us to that creative intelligence which lies behind this Universe.  “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them”; Gen 1:27, undoubtedly affirms that God the Creator has endowed mankind with creativity in His own image. Mankind has that analytical capacity to reason unlike the other created species, and since we are created in His own image, we have the ability to research, ability to imagine, the ability to discover even many fascinating details about the nature and we can even plunge into research about the origin of the Universe.

Being a former Chemistry lecturer, I can well fathom that our Universe is made up of different things, atoms, dark matter, dark energy, and we will not be here without atoms, and we are in need of oxygen, carbon which becomes the basis of Organic Chemistry. Science has discovered the reason for the auroa, even the colours in the aurora, and did clarify some of the myths and imaginations as fire bridges, gods, dancing ghosts and points us to the Creator God Who is wisdom and majesty, and power, Who is unfathomably Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Omnipotent.
Scriptural cross references to support the above are; Rom: 1:19-20; Gen 1:6-7; 14; Psa:8; Psa:50:6; Psa:89:5; Psa:97:6; Psa:145:10; Jer: 31:35.

Why prayer is important?

We are caught up in a world, which believes completely different from the Word of God, and many people are beginning to wonder if they really need to pray! Even Christians struggle in prayer life even when we know we ought to pray. It is increasingly important that every believer should pray and let us look at some of the reasons below why we should pray.

Prayer is a beautiful form of communication between man and God and it is very important that mankind need to establish this relationship with God. Prayer is a form of expressing one’s heart, mind, emotions, feelings, will, desires and even the inadequacies to God.  God has communicated through His Word and He gives us His assurance and answers and reveals His supremacy to the believing Christians. I would say that prayer is building friendship with God, and it is a way of engaging with God who loves us and wants to share time with us.

Though this is the most important exercise of piety, yet in forming our prayers, and regulating our wishes, all our senses fail us. No man will pray aright, unless his lips and heart shall be directed by the Heavenly Master1.John Calvin

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened”; Matt: 7:7-8. “Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not”; Jam: 4:2. Prayer is a way of expressing our desires to God, and the Word of God explicitly states that we ought to ask if we want to receive.

A heavenly pattern for our earthly life, OUR Father's will shall certainly be done, for the Lord "doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth." Let us adoringly consent that it shall be so, desiring no alteration therein2. - Charles Spurgeon

“For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,  May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God”; Ephe: 3:14-19. As Apostle Paul writes, when we begin to communicate with the Living God, we begin to understand His Word, and we will receive boldness to face life because we begin to understand His love. The love supremely showed on the cross for humanity through the death of His Son.

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”; Jude: 20. Through prayer our faith is build up in the knowledge of God’s Son, and Jesus gave the finest example about prayer to His disciples by teaching them the Lord’s Prayer. Prayer is one of the vehicle through the courage and confidence in God is build up and we can grow spiritually mature. Prayer and especially the body of believers are strengthened when we pray together.

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”; Eph 6:18. Believers can overcome the forces of darkness through prayer, because we believe that Satan is defeated on the cross. Apostle Paul is talking about the weapons of our warfare which in the Book of Ephesians and encouraging believers to stand against the wiles of the devil through prayer.

Prayer is an invitation to God to act in this dark world. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them”; Gen 1:26-27.  The dominion God has given to Adam was sold to Satan; “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them”; 2 Cor:4:4. We understand from the above Word of God that Satan has the legal right in this world and is the god of this age and has blinded the minds of many. Without prayer and petitioning, God cannot move the lease which was given to the evil forces by Adam, and we pray and ask God to intervene in these situations.

Especially in petitioning we are asking God to protect us, guide us, and bless us. We pray for strength, courage, comfort, for wisdom and above all for peace which passeth all understanding which the world cannot give. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you; Matt 6:33.

Thus therefore pray ye - He who best knew what we ought to pray for, and how we ought to pray, what matter of desire, what manner of address would most please himself, would best become us, has here dictated to us a most perfect and universal form of prayer, comprehending all our real wants, expressing all our lawful desires; a complete directory and full exercise of all our devotions3.- John Wesley
